I'm actually doing an assessment on this at the moment for Uni. It's exciting. I made a list of the different reasons people get tattoos and, while I'm sure I've left something out, I think it's pretty comprehensive. It doesn't answer your question in the sense that it's not why -I- would get a tattoo... but it's interesting none-the-less.
Religious (iconography, art, symbols etc.) Social/Cultural - group recognition (XXX, Stoner, that kind of thing), 'popular' symbols (brand names etc.), friendship/group tattoos (group like football club, where you know -everyone- in it), symbols from other cultures where you take the meaning as well as the design. Personal - family, relationships, memorials to people, recognitions of personal events, struggles or histories, symbols with personal meanings (ie - you made it up yourself even if other people -happen- to give the same meaning to the same symbol), personal rites of passage and, of course, simply for the aesthetics.
Personally, I have a cat design in the making for next year some time and it represents 'innocence lost' in the sense of suddenly discovering what's -really- happening around you and the truths in the world in which you live. It also stands for always striving for justice and balance and understanding that in order to survive you have to support the environment that supports -you-. I figure that if I don't still like the ideas behind it when I'm 70 that I've really turned into an old b.itch and that it's -me- that's wrong, not the tattoo. It's not an overtly subjective meaning in terms of age and context.

I hate when people get tattoos of different languages especially when they can't even read or speak the language. It *#!es me off so much. I also hate when people get tattoos of things that "look ". It doesn't matter if it looks or not...if it doesnt have a personal meaning to it...its dumb. Personally, I have given myself two tattoos and they both mean something to me. Whoever gets a different language on them without actually speaking the language themselves are Tools.

I think there's a difference between people who get tattoos because they "look " and people who think they enhance the beauty of their body, even if there isn't really a big meaning behind it. If you view your body as an everchanging work of art then I don't see why getting simply ' looking' tattoos would be dumb. Getting tattoos for other people or just to fit in or be is kinda dumb, but I think you underestimate how some people view the aesthetic potentials of their body, without there haven't to be special symbolism or meanings behind everything.

Yeah. There's people who get a tattoo because they want to be , and those who get it because they think its .

Well, when I turn 18 my ma's taking me to get my tongue, and naval pierced and a tattooI dunno yet what Ima get but Im thinkin about cherries, or a fairy, or butterfly. Just sumthin cute. People get tattoos to express themselves, If they get like a demon, or just somethin evil, they probly hate da world. If they get somethin like a butterfly or a tinkerbelle or a flower, etc they themselves and are able. and Gurly

| I suppose for memories. I got the flames at my elbow to my shoulder because of my life before my sixteenth birthday. I had the Surf's Up for when I last surfed with my guys and busted myself on shore. | |

I got my tattoos because of what they mean to me. I have my families signatures on my foot with a scroll saying "with me every step of the way" So that no matter where my life may take me they are with me and i know that they me and will support me. I also have a playboy bunny tattoo on my hip and i got alot of flack for that because everyone says everyone has that and it doesnt mean anything well to me it does, the time i got it was when i lost a lot of weight and decided to take better care of myself. I got the playboy bunny because to me it symbolizes femininity and sexiness and thats what i wanted. so now everytime i look at that tattoo i feel good about my self and i like that. Tattoos are very personal and every one has a story and reason behind why they have them. Alot of people dont agree with mine and to them i say to each their own.

| I don't have any tatoos but know other people who do have them. They say it is because of their true thoughts and interests. It sounds reasonable to me. | |
